Between Shades of Gray

Between Shades of Gray - Ruta Sepetys Wow. What a powerful novel. This book focuses on the deportation and imprisonment of Lina, a 15 year old Lithuanian girl, her 10 year old brother Jonas, and her mother Elena commencing on June 14, 1941.I have heard of Adolf Hitler and the horrific recounts of the Holocaust of course, but I was ignorant to the fact that Josef Stalin was killing millions of people from Lithuania, Finland, Estonia, Latvia....How could this be??? Most likely because while Hitler was making front pages with his propaganda, Stalin and the NKVD were threatening people with further imprisonment if they so much as mentioned it. That would be "anti-soviet" of them. So victims who survived remained quiet out of fear, leaving the rest of the world in the dark about the atrocites they endured.Well, now I know. And others should know too. This book was a well written testament of the evil humans are capable of inflicting on one another.
